The President of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom has appointed Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) as the Ambassador from Maldives to Sri Lanka. President Yameen presented the letter of appointment to the new Ambassador in a ceremony held at the President’s Office yesterday.
The Parliament approved this appointment on August 23rd with 28 votes in favor. Moreover, the article 115(l) of the constitution states that the President should appoint members of diplomatic missions to foreign countries and international organizations in consultation with the parliament.
Shareef has been serving as the Ambassador to Japan since August 2016 and was nominated for this post after the government dismissed the former Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Zahiya Zareer.
Shareef has been serving the Government of Maldives over the past 17 years. He was the spokesperson of the Government during the former President, Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom’s tenure. Additionally, he was the Minister of Youth and Sports during the former President, Mohamed Waheed’s tenure and is the current Minister of the President’s Office. Shareef holds a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy.
