Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has opened a dedicated Calm Room at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport on Sunday, providing a sensory-friendly space for passengers with non-visible disabilities and others who may benefit from a quieter airport environment.
The facility was inaugurated by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed, who described the initiative as an important step in the airport’s efforts to provide more inclusive services for travellers.
Developed under MACL’s Boli initiative, the Calm Room is designed to support passengers with sensory sensitivities, anxiety, autism and other non-visible conditions. The space aims to provide a calmer environment that can help reduce stress and improve comfort during the travel experience.
MACL said the facility forms part of its broader efforts to ensure airport services are accessible and welcoming to all passengers, regardless of their individual needs.
The company acknowledged the contribution of Autism Care Maldives and Maldives Autism Association, which provided technical guidance and support during the development of the facility.
MACL also announced plans to expand similar services to Terminal 2 and the airport’s seaplane terminal in the future.
The company said the opening of the Calm Room reflects its ongoing commitment to enhancing accessibility and creating a more passenger-friendly environment at the country’s main international gateway.
