President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has officially inaugurated the structural work for the construction of the new runway to be built at Velana International Airport (VIA).
The ceremony was held today at VIA and was attended by several key officials of the Maldives, along with members of the Cabinet and the Managing Director of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) Mr. Adil Moosa. The runway project, worth USD 400 million, is financed by a loan from China Exim Bank and will be 3400 meters long and 60 meters wide upon completion.
MACL has stated that the work on the new runway, which is being conducted by one of China’s largest construction companies ‘Beijing Urban Construction Group’ will be completed next year. The new runway will be able to accommodate aircraft of any size, including Airbus A380’s, the largest aircraft in the world.
