The project is being carried out under the World Bank’s Accelerating Sustainable Private Investments in Renewable Energy (ASPIRE) initiative, which aims to assist the Maldives in speeding up its renewable energy transition.

According to the Ministry, 34 of the 61 companies that expressed interest have applied for prequalification, and 12 have been cleared for the bidding process. Qualified businesses must submit proposals by 15th October 2021, and fieldwork for the projects is expected to begin early next year.

As part of the initiative, the government also intends to build 40 megawatt-hour battery energy storage devices to store excess energy from solar PV installations.
