Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has reported a significant increase in fish collection, with a total of 39,750 metric tons (MT) collected from fishermen as of last week. Recent data released by MIFCO shows a notable 25% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Among the fishing complexes, the Addu fisheries complex experienced a remarkable 65% increase in fish collection. The Kooddoo Fisheries Complex witnessed a commendable 26% increase, while the Felivaru Fisheries Complex observed a modest 1% uptick in tuna collection.
This surge in tuna collection has had a positive impact on the financial compensation provided to the fishermen. MIFCO has disbursed a total of MVR 661 million to fishermen thus far in the current year. This represents a substantial 29.2% increase when compared to the previous year’s payment of MVR 512 million.
