Maldives and Egypt Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Sign MoU on Diplomatic Training

The Republic of Maldives and the Arab Republic of Egypt strengthened their bilateral relationship during the Second Round of Maldives-Egypt Bilateral Political Consultations held on July 16, 2023, in Male’. Led by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel and Ambassador Ayman Kamel, the consultations reaffirmed their mutual interest in enhancing existing ties.

Discussions between the two countries centered on various fields of cooperation, including economic, trade, tourism, education, climate change, security, and counter-terrorism. The consultations led to the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the Field of Diplomatic Training, aiming to foster collaboration and expertise exchange.

Both countries expressed enthusiasm for celebrating the forthcoming 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024 and emphasized the importance of high-level visits, including a visit by Grand Imam Professor Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb to the Maldives.

The nations explored the possibility of establishing direct air connections, enhancing consular cooperation, and promoting tolerance in Islam. They reaffirmed their commitment to continue working closely at multilateral fora, including the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, on global issues affecting the Islamic Ummah. The Third Round of Bilateral Political Consultations is scheduled to be held in Cairo in 2024.
