Seaplane operations in the Maldives began in earnest in the late 1980s with the establishment of Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA). Initially starting as a helicopter service, TMA transitioned to seaplanes in 1997 due to their practicality and efficiency in navigating the numerous islands of the Maldives. Today, TMA operates the largest seaplane fleet in the world, with over 65 aircraft, transporting close to a million passengers annually.
