Beijing Meeting Reinforces Maldives-China Strategic Partnership

Moosa Zameer, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, and Wang Yi, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, convened for extensive bilateral discussions in Beijing today. The meeting highlighted the ongoing commitment of both countries to enhance their historical and friendly relations.

Minister Wang Yi extended a warm welcome to Minister Zameer, reaffirming China’s dedication to deepening the ties that have flourished over the past 50 years. Minister Zameer, carrying greetings from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, delivered two letters addressed to Chinese President Xi Jinping, symbolising the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between the Maldives and China.

During the discussions, Minister Zameer reiterated the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to the One-China Principle and the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership established during President Dr. Muizzu’s state visit to China in January. The agenda covered a broad spectrum of topics crucial to the bilateral relationship, with both parties expressing a keen interest in exploring new avenues for cooperation.

Minister Zameer highlighted the substantial support received from China through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has significantly contributed to the Maldives’ socio-economic development. Notable projects include the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, the expansion of Velana International Airport, and various social housing initiatives. These projects, Minister Zameer noted, have been transformative for the Maldivian infrastructure and economy.

In addressing the current economic and fiscal situation in the Maldives, Minister Zameer emphasised the importance of implementing the fiscal reforms announced by President Dr. Muizzu. He sought China’s continued support in these efforts, aiming to foster consumer and investor confidence, thereby bolstering the nation’s economic resilience.

The meeting concluded with both ministers reaffirming their commitment to strengthening political and economic cooperation. Minister Zameer expressed heartfelt appreciation for China’s ongoing support and looked forward to further solidifying the ties between the two countries.

Accompanying Minister Zameer were key figures from the Maldivian government, including Dr. Mohamed Shafeeq, Minister of Finance, Dr. Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure, and Dr. Fazeel Najeeb, Ambassador-Designate. Senior officials from the Government of Maldives and the Embassy of Maldives in China were also in attendance. The official talks were followed by a reception hosted by Minister Wang Yi in honour of Minister Zameer and his delegation.
