Maldives’ Foreign Minister Embarks on Official Visit to Bahrain

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer, has commenced an official visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain upon the invitation of Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. The visit, which spans from 11th to 15th August, is set to reinforce and expand the longstanding diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

During his visit, Minister Zameer will engage in high-level discussions with Bahraini officials, including Dr. Al Zayani, to review the progress of bilateral relations, which have been established for 44 years, and to explore new avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest. These discussions aim to build on recent developments, including several key agreements signed between the two countries.

Notably, during the previous administration, Maldives and Bahrain have significantly deepened their diplomatic ties. In 2022, the two countries exchanged four key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs), which marked a pivotal step in their bilateral relations. These MoUs covered political consultations, diplomatic training, youth and sports development, and climate change cooperation. Additionally, agreements were made to include the Maldives as a sea-to-air partner in Bahrain’s global logistics hub and to ensure Maldivian sovereignty over data in Bahrain-based data centres. These agreements reflect both countries’ commitment to enhancing cooperation across various sectors.

During his visit, Minister Zameer is also scheduled to meet with other senior Bahraini officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Oil and Environment, and Tourism. These meetings aim to explore further collaboration opportunities in finance, energy, environmental protection, and tourism—sectors that are critical to both nations’ economic growth.

The Maldives and Bahrain have enjoyed a strong diplomatic relationship since establishing official ties in 1980. Over the years, this partnership has expanded to include cooperation in numerous fields, reflecting shared interests and mutual respect. Minister Zameer’s visit is expected to further cement this relationship and explore new areas of cooperation that could benefit both countries in the coming years.

This visit illustrates the Maldives’ continued commitment to fostering strong international relationships, particularly within the Gulf region, and highlights the strategic importance of Bahrain as a partner in this endeavour.
