Maldives Immigration has announced the deportation of over 4,000 expatriates for various legal violations since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office.
The figures, spanning from 17th November last year to 17th September this year, indicate a total of 4,054 deportations.
The data highlights that 633 expatriates were deported in September alone. June saw the highest number of deportations, with 690 individuals sent back during that month.
These actions are part of the government’s broader efforts to address the issue of undocumented migrants and ensure compliance with immigration regulations. The operations have been spearheaded by an Immigration task force, established by the Ministry of Home Affairs, to clamp down on violations.
Among those deported were individuals who had overstayed their visas, as well as those involved in criminal activities such as theft, drug offences, and prostitution.
In recent months, Maldives Immigration has increased its efforts, conducting raids and inspections of both residential areas and workplaces to ensure foreign workers adhere to the country’s immigration laws.
