The Minister of Finance, Moosa Zameer, has confirmed that the government is preparing a supplementary budget to cover the current year’s financial needs. Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Zameer explained that the additional budget is necessary due to discrepancies in the previous year’s annual budget.
The Minister noted that in recent years, the state has regularly spent beyond its approved budget, with excess spending later added to a supplementary budget. Zameer also acknowledged concerns raised by the current Attorney General, who labelled the practice as unlawful and unconstitutional. The ongoing work aims to address these issues through a more structured approach to budget management.
Zameer stated that the exact amount for the supplementary budget will be finalised after discussions with the cabinet and the president, as well as the release of the Auditor General’s report. He pointed out that in previous years, supplementary budgets have been proposed, including MVR 6.5 billion added to the original state budget in recent years.
