Maafaru International Airport in Noonu Atoll has resumed international flight operations after a period of halted service due to runway expansion. Originally inaugurated in 2019, the airport began serving international flights on 1st July 2020, quickly gaining popularity among private jet operators, particularly for tourists visiting luxury resorts in the nearby Noonu, Raa, and Baa Atolls.
International flights at Maafaru were temporarily suspended in May to accommodate the runway expansion project, managed by Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL). With operations now restored, IASL expects that approximately 100 jets will land at the airport up to 10th January 2025.
The recent expansion extended the runway to 2,800 metres, enabling it to accommodate larger aircraft, including models like the Airbus A320, Boeing 737, and Boeing 777. Further airport enhancements include an apron expansion, a project undertaken by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) in August. This upgrade is expected to conclude next month and will increase parking capacity from 13 to 26 jets. Additionally, two new taxiways are part of the airport’s development, enhancing its capacity for increased traffic.
The airport’s popularity continues to grow, with 353 jets landing there in 2023—an increase of 125 compared to 2022. Maafaru International Airport also facilitated the arrival of 1,943 tourists last year, highlighting its role as a key gateway for high-end travellers seeking exclusive resort experiences in the Maldives.
With these infrastructure improvements, Maafaru International Airport is set to enhance its role in Maldivian tourism, strengthening its appeal to international visitors and positioning itself as a prime entry point for the northern atolls.
