President Dr Mohamed Muizzu attended the opening session of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Baku, Azerbaijan. This year’s conference, themed “In Solidarity For A Green World,” provides a platform for nations to address pressing climate challenges and collaborate on sustainable solutions.
COP29, running from 11 to 22 November 2024, is a critical juncture for global climate policy. Key discussions include establishing a new collective financial goal to support developing countries in their climate mitigation and adaptation efforts, enhancing international cooperation, and addressing barriers to the development of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
For the Maldives, a nation acutely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, COP29 offers an opportunity to highlight its resilience initiatives and sustainable development objectives. President Muizzu has been a consistent advocate for the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS), raising awareness on issues such as sea-level rise and extreme weather events that threaten the Maldives’ existence.
This marks President Muizzu’s second participation in a COP since assuming office in November 2023. At COP28, he outlined a vision for a climate-resilient Maldives, introducing an ambitious plan to plant five million trees and committing to generate 33% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources within five years.
Ahead of the opening session, President Muizzu joined other global leaders for a group photograph, symbolising unity in the fight against climate change. He is scheduled to deliver the Maldives’ national address later today, where he will further elaborate on the nation’s climate goals and resilience strategies.
The outcomes of COP29 are anticipated to have significant implications for global climate action, particularly in terms of financial commitments and policy frameworks that will shape the future of international climate efforts.
