The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has commenced efforts to develop a 25-year masterplan aimed at guiding the sustainable growth and diversification of the fisheries sector. The strategic plan is intended to provide a comprehensive framework to ensure the industry’s development is systematic and well-organised.
According to the ministry, the masterplan will define the long-term vision and objectives for the sector, focusing on the optimal use of marine resources and maximising economic returns. It seeks to address key challenges while exploring new opportunities for diversification within the industry, which remains a cornerstone of the Maldivian economy.
The ministry also confirmed that the process of drafting and finalising the masterplan is being supported with funding from the World Bank. This collaboration is expected to strengthen the capacity of the plan to deliver meaningful and sustainable outcomes for the fisheries sector.
Once completed, the masterplan is anticipated to play a significant role in shaping the future of fisheries in the Maldives, balancing economic benefits with the preservation of marine ecosystems. It marks a forward-looking step in ensuring that one of the country’s most critical industries remains viable for future generations.
