Maldives Maintains Stance on International Issues, Says Foreign Minister

The Maldives has not altered its stance on international issues, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel affirmed on Thursday. His remarks came amid widespread social media speculation suggesting a shift in the nation’s position to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

In a statement shared on X, Minister Khaleel reiterated that the Maldives’ foreign policy remains consistent, as demonstrated through its voting patterns at the United Nations (UN).

“The Maldives has always taken a principled stance on issues related to the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of all countries – in line with the UN Charter,” he stated.

The Minister underscored the importance of the Maldives’ “balanced foreign policy,” which is rooted in fostering close and friendly relations with all nations. This approach, he emphasised, serves to safeguard the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives, ultimately benefitting the Maldivian people.

Historically, the Maldives has maintained a neutral position in bilateral disputes, with one notable exception: its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. On the global stage, the Maldives remains a staunch advocate for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine.

Minister Khaleel’s comments highlight the nation’s commitment to neutrality and adherence to international principles, even as global tensions escalate.
