Gov’t Focuses on Healthcare Expansion and Primary Care Reforms

Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has announced the government’s comprehensive strategy to enhance healthcare services nationwide, including new developments in Malé City and the outer atolls. Speaking during a visit to Raa Atoll alongside President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Minister highlighted a series of reforms aimed at improving access to quality healthcare.

Among the key initiatives is the adoption of bulk procurement policies to import essential medicines and pharmaceutical equipment, ensuring these resources reach hospitals and healthcare centres across the islands. The approach aligns with President Muizzu’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and making quality medical services more accessible to all citizens.

Expansion of Services and Universal Healthcare

The government’s plans include the introduction of new healthcare services in both the capital and the outer atolls this year. Minister Ibrahim reaffirmed the administration’s focus on expanding access to the national universal healthcare insurance platform, Aasandha, which now covers healthcare services in Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Efforts to regulate medicine prices and improve affordability are also underway. Additionally, air ambulance services have been launched, and funds have been allocated in the 2025 budget to develop five hospitals, including facilities specialising in thalassemia and cancer treatment.

Preventive Care and Tackling Diseases

A major focus of the administration’s healthcare reforms is addressing the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The Minister emphasised the importance of enhancing primary healthcare services, promoting preventive care, and ensuring sustainable enforcement of these initiatives across all atolls.

Tobacco Control and Public Health

The government has also implemented measures to curb tobacco use, including raising taxes on tobacco imports, banning vaping devices and products, and increasing the legal age for purchasing tobacco products to 21 years. These steps reflect a broader commitment to public health and reducing NCDs.

Commitment to a Healthier Nation

Minister Ibrahim described these reforms as part of President Muizzu’s broader developmental agenda, reflecting an unwavering commitment to prioritising healthcare. “The goal is to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all Maldivians, while promoting sustainable improvements to the system,” he said.

As the government pushes forward with its healthcare initiatives, the focus remains on creating a more robust, inclusive, and accessible system for citizens across the Maldives.
