Maldives and India Forge Ahead with Economic and Security Partnership

The first meeting of the High-Level Core Group (HLCG) between the Maldives and India was held in Male’. The meeting, convened to implement ‘A Vision for Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership’, took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, marking a new chapter in the cooperation between the two nations.

The discussions, steered by the vision document set forth by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after their October meeting last year, covered a broad spectrum of cooperative areas. Key topics included development cooperation, trade and commerce, digital financing, health cooperation, strengthening people-to-people connections, as well as defence and maritime security.

Both countries reviewed their current collaborations with an aim to deepen ties, focusing on sustainable development projects, enhancing trade relations, and ensuring maritime security in the region. The meeting underscored the commitment of both nations to not only maintain but also amplify their cooperative efforts in these strategic areas.

The dialogue was constructive, with both sides expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far and setting the stage for further engagements. The next meeting of the HLCG is scheduled to occur in India in April 2025, promising continued momentum in the partnership.

This initiative is seen as a testament to the enduring friendship and shared objectives between Maldives and India, aiming for a robust framework that supports mutual growth and security in the Indian Ocean region.
