President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated the country’s representatives to three major international organisations, forwarding the names to Parliament for endorsement. The nominations have been sent to the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee for vetting.
Dr Salma Rasheed, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva, has been nominated as the country’s representative to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Meanwhile, Dr Iruthisham Adam, the High Commissioner of Maldives to the United Kingdom, has been nominated as the country’s representative to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). Ambassador Mohamed Hussain Shareef, who currently serves as the Maldives’ envoy to the United Arab Emirates, has been put forward as the country’s representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The WTO, which the Maldives has been a member of since 1995, plays a critical role in regulating international trade. Before joining the organisation, the Maldives was a signatory to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) from 1993. The IMO, a United Nations specialised agency, oversees maritime safety and environmental protection. The Maldives became a member in 1967. IRENA, established in 2009, promotes global efforts in renewable energy, with the Maldives having played an active role since its formation. The country previously held the position of Vice Chair of the IRENA Assembly following the elections in 2013.
The nominations reflect the government’s continued engagement with key international bodies and its commitment to strengthening the country’s global presence.
