Agriculture Minister Calls Food Security a Pillar of National Independence

Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Dr Mariyam Mariya has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to food security, describing it as a top priority in line with the government’s vision.

Speaking on the issue, Dr Mariya highlighted the Maldives’ growing reliance on imported food products, stressing the importance of reducing this dependency. She noted that food security is not just an economic matter but also crucial for preserving national identity, food culture, and ensuring a healthy future for coming generations.

The Minister highlighted that food security extends beyond basic sustenance, citing Maldivian history as an example. She pointed out that in the past, island communities were largely self-sufficient, relying on farming and marine resources to sustain themselves. “The capability to produce one’s own food is the commencement of independence. It is a significant pillar in attaining sustainable development as envisioned by the President,” she said.

The conversation around food security has gained traction following the State Trading Organization’s (STO) recent announcement of plans to import coconuts to sell at lower prices during Ramadan. The move has sparked public criticism, as coconuts are readily available in the Maldives, raising concerns over the necessity of importing a locally accessible product.

As the government pushes forward with its food security agenda, discussions continue on how to balance domestic agricultural development with the realities of a heavily import-dependent economy.
