The Chartered Accountants of the Maldives (CA Maldives) has announced plans to commence the registration of accountants working in businesses across the country later this year. The move marks a significant expansion of the organisation’s regulatory scope beyond auditors and licensed members.
The initiative was announced by CA Maldives President Mohamed Haleem Abdulla at a recent ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development. The event, held on 14 April 2025, was convened to award 100 scholarships to train professional accountants in the Maldives.
The registration of accountants in business is a statutory responsibility of CA Maldives, as outlined in the CA Maldives Act. This has been designated as a key priority under the organisation’s current three-year strategic plan, approved by the existing council.
In line with the expansion, CA Maldives will introduce annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions for all registered accountants. These programmes are intended to meet regulatory obligations while strengthening technical competencies within the accounting profession. Topics will cover areas such as taxation, fiscal policy, and financial regulations, supplemented by practical case studies to foster real-world application.
CA Maldives believes that the initiative will support greater compliance and awareness across the business community. It also aims to enhance coordination and transparency among professionals, potentially reducing instances of financial misconduct and corruption.
Established under an Act of Parliament, CA Maldives serves as the regulatory authority for the accounting and auditing profession in the country. Its core functions include licensing auditors, overseeing audit practices, and setting national accounting standards for corporate financial reporting.
