Velana International Airport (VIA) is working on their last preparation to land Etihad Airways A380-800 flight in the new runway in this month. This is the largest Airbus to be landed in the Maldives history.
The ceremony will be held on 18th September. A member of “Shady Cabin Family” will be leading the flight to the new runway and making the landing. He is the only person in the Maldives who has the license for an Airbus A380 Flight. The Airbus is designed with double decks and has the capacity for 868 passengers.
The new runway of Velana International Airport was developed by a Chinese company, Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) which is 3,400 meters long and 60 meters wide. The project was handed to them by the Maldives government for USD 400 million. Furthermore, An area of 3,300 meters has been sheet piled and 62 hectors of land reclamation project
