Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, has announced the expansion of the Dhanduveri Nafaa Loan Programme, which will now offer loans of up to USD 32,000 without collateral. This announcement was made during her special address for National Farmers’ Day on October 15 and World Food Day on October 16.
In her speech, Minister Rameela reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making agriculture a key sector of the Maldivian economy, emphasising efforts to support newcomers and elevate the sector. She noted that one million dollars has already been disbursed under the Dhanduveri Nafaa Loan Programme, which is now being further strengthened. The Ministry, in collaboration with the SME Development Finance Corporation (SDFC), is working to increase the current loan cap from USD 6,500 to USD 32,000. These loans will be structured to comply with Islamic financing principles.
The Minister also revealed a new partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to expand the agribusiness programme. This includes the development of model greenhouses on 12 islands, with an additional five islands to follow. She further announced a new initiative allowing farmers to invest in greenhouses, with free aid being distributed to eligible applicants starting next week. Out of 68 farmers who have applied, those approved will receive aid following an evaluation process.
In addition, Minister Rameela shared plans for the Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) Agriculture Zone Project, which aims to transform the agricultural landscape in the Maldives, alongside a vertical farming project designed to introduce innovative agricultural practices. She also highlighted the Ministry’s plans to establish the National Plant Protection Organisation next year, with operations expected to begin soon after. The Minister confirmed that the agricultural laboratory will be completed by the end of the year, marking another significant milestone in strengthening the country’s agricultural sector.
