Application Deadline for EU Grants for Tourism Industry SMEs Extended

The European Union (EU) grant project “EU Support for a Resilient Recovery of SME Tourism Industry in the Maldives” is helping guesthouses and safari vessels in the Maldives to recover from post-pandemic losses.

The EU has provided EUR 2 million (nearly MVR 36 million) to help the local tourism industry to recover from the COVID-19 crisis. A total of EUR 1.4 million (around MVR 25 million) has been allocated for SME recovery grants.

The overall objective of the project is to enable the Maldives to create a more resilient and diversified economy by enabling tourism sector MSMES to recover from the COVID-19 crisis. Proving direct grant support to local tourism businesses is one of the main objectives of the project.

443 grant applications were received till end of May 2022. Out of the total applications received, a payment of MVR 13.1 million has been made to 346 eligible establishments till date. The application deadline for the EU grants has been extended till 31 August 2022, 1400 hrs local time.
