In her new capacity, Asma will lead and advise on key reform initiatives, reporting directly to the Minister of Finance and the minister’s advisor. Her responsibilities include overseeing economic restructuring activities, implementing fiscal reforms, and formulating strategies to ensure macroeconomic stability. She will also play a central role in preparing performance reports for state-owned enterprises and developing frameworks to reduce state expenditure while increasing government revenue.

The Reform Office, which Asma will lead, is being established to enhance the efficiency of the government’s financial system. The office will focus on aligning financial reform strategies with long-term economic goals, addressing the growing need for sustainable fiscal management in the Maldives.

Asma Shafeeu’s professional background includes a decade-long tenure at MIRA, where she served as Deputy Commissioner General of Taxation from 2019 until her departure in October 2024. Her leadership in taxation and financial administration positions her well to spearhead the government’s ambitious reform agenda.

The Ministry of Finance stated that the appointment marks a significant step in achieving stronger fiscal governance, reducing financial vulnerabilities, and ensuring the state’s economic resilience.
