Crackdown on Undocumented Migrants Sees Shift Towards Legalisation

The Maldivian government’s initiative to address undocumented migration has seen strong participation, with most expatriates opting to legalise their status rather than face deportation, according to Maldives Immigration.

Authorities have intensified efforts to regulate the presence of undocumented workers in the country, launching a series of inspections and enforcement actions. A special task force, consisting of representatives from key government ministries and enforcement agencies, has been conducting surprise visits to identify those without valid documentation. While many have been deported, the government has also opened pathways for regularisation, allowing eligible migrants to formalise their status.

Chief Immigration Officer Ahmed Mujthaba, speaking to state media, said that the programme has been widely embraced. He noted that expatriates flagged for missing payments, changing employers, or failing to complete previous legalisation processes are being given another opportunity to comply.

“We are rechecking people given a second chance, and I have to say it’s a huge success. Almost all the places we have revisited have used the opportunity. Accommodation conditions have improved, and legal requirements are being met. This programme has been very successful,” he said.

Maldives Immigration has set an ambitious goal of resolving the issue of undocumented migration within three years. With sustained enforcement and cooperation across government agencies, officials believe they are on track to achieve this target.
