Customs Investigates Suspected Cigarette Smuggling at VIA

Maldives Customs Service has launched an investigation following the discovery of cartons of cigarettes being removed from the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA).

In a post on X, Customs confirmed that the cigarettes were found packed inside dustbin bags that were being taken out of the terminal. While Customs acknowledged the incident, no details were provided on the quantity of cigarettes recovered or whether any arrests had been made in connection with the case.

It has emerged that a police officer was allegedly involved in attempting to remove the items from the airport premises. Sources suggest that Maldives Police Service is now working in coordination with Customs and has requested further information on the matter.

Customs stated that the incident is under active investigation and noted that a significant quantity of cigarette cartons has already been seized, though an exact figure has not been disclosed.

This incident comes in the context of tighter tobacco regulations in the Maldives. In November last year, the Tobacco Control Act was amended to prohibit the importation and use of vapes, along with components used in the production of tobacco-related products such as bidis and cigars.

Authorities have yet to clarify whether the cigarettes were intended for smuggling or other unlawful distribution.
