Fisheries Minister Calls for Evidence-Based Solutions to Protect Oceans at UN Ocean Decade Event

Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has emphasised the importance of evidence-based science and innovative technology in advancing ocean and maritime development. He delivered the remarks during the Thematic Discussion on the Ocean Decade, held as part of the Third China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Blue Economy Development Cooperation in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.

Minister Shiyam highlighted the critical role of oceans and marine ecosystems in the Maldivian economy, stating that their protection is essential for the livelihoods of Maldivians who have relied on ocean resources for centuries. Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives are on the frontlines of climate change and are among the first to face its devastating effects, he warned, reiterating the importance of safeguarding oceans for future generations.

The minister underscored the ongoing challenges faced by marine ecosystems and how the use of science and innovative technologies is crucial to addressing these threats. “Protecting and preserving our ocean resources is paramount,” he stated, linking the call for action to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

The year 2024 marks the fourth year of the Ocean Decade initiative, which focuses on the theme “delivering the science we need for the ocean we want.” Minister Shiyam noted that the initiative aligns closely with the challenges faced by the Maldives, providing opportunities to leverage science to preserve ocean resources and promote sustainable solutions.

He further stressed the importance of the Global Development Initiative (GDI) in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives, he explained, empower fishermen, advocate for the protection of marine life, and encourage scientific research on preserving marine ecosystems.

Highlighting the necessity of global collaboration, Minister Shiyam called for countries to share information, expertise, and experiences to collectively address global ocean challenges. He concluded by underscoring the importance of working together to ensure sustainable development, benefiting future generations while protecting the oceans that remain vital to nations like the Maldives.

The event serves as a platform to discuss the role of science and cooperation in fostering sustainable ocean development, aligning with the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to lead in ocean preservation and the fight against climate change.
