The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Moosa Zameer, met with the United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken. The discussions focused on deepening the relationship between the Maldives and the United States, covering key areas such as defence and security cooperation, promoting democracy, economic growth, and climate change adaptation.
During the meeting, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new avenues for partnership enhancement. The dialogue highlighted the importance of maintaining a rules-based international order and reiterated mutual dedication to regional stability, maritime security, and the promotion of peace.
Secretary Blinken extended his congratulations to the Maldives for the successful conduct of the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He also lauded the Maldives’ leadership role on the global stage in combatting climate change and advocating for environmental sustainability.
Minister Zameer, in turn, emphasised the significance of the educational opportunities offered by the United States to Maldivian students. He advocated for streamlined visa facilitation services, which he noted would enhance people-to-people contact and foster cultural exchange, tourism, and business ties between the two nations.
Accompanying Minister Zameer at the meeting were several key officials, including the Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States of America, Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed; Secretary, Bilateral, Dr Hala Hameed; Senior Undersecretary, Hassan Hussain Shihab; Counsellor, Zeena Didi; and Second Secretary, Ibrahim Haail.
This meeting marks a significant milestone in Maldives-U.S. relations, reflecting a shared vision for a stable, prosperous, and environmentally sustainable future.
