The government has disbursed over MVR 107.4 million in compensation payments as of April 11th, exceeding the MVR 101 million allocated for the year in the state budget. This figure marks an increase from the MVR 99.5 million spent during the corresponding period in the previous year.
According to the Ministry of Finance’s Weekly Fiscal Development Report, a significant portion of this expenditure (approximately MVR 82 million) dates back to transactions conducted during the previous administration.
On April 9th, the Ministry of Finance clarified that these compensation payments are directed towards individuals who made payments to the previous government and that new compensation recipients have not emerged under the current administration.
Notably, the government significantly surpassed its initial compensation budget in the previous year. While MVR 101 million was initially allocated, the final compensation expenditure amounted to MVR 557 million, according to finance figures.
