Senior government officials recently convened to discuss the registration of fishermen in collaboration with local councils. The meeting, attended by Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam and Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, focused on the progress of the registration initiative.
During the session, Minister Shiyam provided updates on the registration process, emphasising that it is being carried out in partnership with ministry teams and designated council focal points. Minister Adam Shareef Umar highlighted the importance of establishing a specialised team to improve coordination between ministries and suggested sharing registration information during council meetings.
The meeting also addressed the additional support councils require to complete the registration process effectively.
Establishing a National Register of Fishermen aligns with President Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign promises. It aims to ensure the recognition of fishermen as professionals engaged in state-recognised, income-generating occupations.
As part of the fishermen’s register, the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources reported that 200 vessels have been registered.
