The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has announced an invitation for investors to establish solar energy systems across thirteen islands. The ministry is seeking investors to install 15 megawatts of solar panels and provide electricity services through a design, build, finance, own, operate, and transfer policy.
The project, part of the Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) programme, aims to enhance the country’s renewable energy capacity. The application process for bidding is now open to interested investors.
Under this initiative, 2 megawatts of solar panels will be installed on six islands in Laamu Atoll: Hithadhoo, Kunahandhoo, Maibaadhoo, Maamendhoo, Maavah, and Dhan’bidhoo. Additionally, 13 megawatts of solar panels will be set up on seven islands: Funadhoo in Shaviyani Atoll, Naifaru in Lhaviyani Atoll, Isdhoo, Kalhaidhoo, Fonadhoo, and Gan in Laamu Atoll, and Vilin’gili in Gaafu Alif Atoll.
The ministry stated that the bidding process will adhere to international competitive procurement standards, following a single-stage two-envelope process under World Bank Procurement Regulation for IPF Borrowers. The bidding will open on October 22.
Once implemented, the project is expected to save 6 million litres of fuel annually and reduce government expenditure on fuel by MVR 48 million. The government’s broader goal is to increase renewable energy production to 33 percent of the total energy produced in the country within the next five years. Several other projects have been announced under this policy to support this transition.
