Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has emphasised the need for workplaces to be more inclusive and provide employees with opportunities to showcase their skills. Speaking at the opening of the 5th National HR Convention on Saturday, he reiterated the government’s commitment to human resource development, particularly in the tourism sector.
Organised by the Maldives Association of HR Professionals (MAHRP), the National HR Convention and EXPO is the country’s largest gathering of HR professionals, business leaders, and industry experts. The two-day event, running from 8-9 February, brings together professionals to discuss evolving trends and challenges in human resource management.
In his remarks, Minister Thoriq noted that the tourism sector remains the backbone of the Maldivian economy and stressed the importance of ensuring that all locals have equal access to employment opportunities in the field. He called for greater inclusivity in workplaces, urging companies to create environments that welcome young people, women, and persons with disabilities.
“We also need to think about making our workplace more inclusive. From youth, to women and persons with disabilities, we need to ensure that no one is left behind. Everyone should have the opportunity to demonstrate their potential and ability in the workplace,” he said.
Shortly after inaugurating the convention, the Minister highlighted in a social media post the rapid transformation of workplaces, driven by technological advancements. He underscored the need for an agile and adaptable workforce, adding that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration remains committed to developing local talent.
The convention features interactive sessions on HR leadership, workplace transformation, employee engagement, and data analytics. Since its launch in 2019, MAHRP has used the event as a platform to promote HR excellence and professional development in the Maldives.
As the country continues to expand its workforce and align with global HR trends, the convention serves as an important space for industry leaders to exchange knowledge and explore innovative solutions for workforce development.
