The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has called on all employers in the Maldives to ensure that biometric registration for their foreign employees is completed by 30 April. The directive forms part of ongoing efforts to address the issue of undocumented migrants in the country.
According to the Ministry, several employers listed in the Expat system have not yet finalised the biometric processing of foreign workers under their sponsorship. Employers who fail to complete this process within the given timeframe risk suspension from the Expat system and will lose access to related services.
The biometric registration campaign is linked to a broader government initiative to formalise the status of foreign nationals living and working in the Maldives. Central to this effort is Operation Kurangi, an ongoing project that involves collecting biometric data through local councils. Over 100,000 migrant workers have already been registered under this system.
Authorities have set a goal to find a lasting solution to the issue of illegal migration by April 2027. As part of enforcement measures, more than 6,700 undocumented migrants have been deported to date, according to figures shared by the Ministry.
The government has said it is committed to maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of all foreign nationals in the country as part of its immigration and border control strategy.
