The amount collected by Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) as green tax has gone down by 6% in comparison to the first quarter of 2018. 241.5 million rufiyaa was collected by MIRA in the first three months of 2019, as per statistics released by MIRA.
The decrease occurred due to a tax collection delay under the tax enforcement policy, according to MIRA. Even though tax received by tourists had gone up by 9.6%, due to a delay in collection, most of the green tax was not collected by the deadline.
Green tax was established in the constitution in 2015 and has been collected annually since then. Currently green tax is collected at a $6 per day rate, from each tourist who stays at from resorts, guest hotels and safaris. For those who stay at guesthouses, the rate is $3 per day.
