Hoandedhdhoo Council Opens Bids for Major Sustainable Agricultural Project on Kannigillaa Island

Hoandedhdhoo Council has announced the launch of a large-scale sustainable agricultural project on Kannigillaa, an uninhabited island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Bidding is now open internationally, with the submission deadline set for 21st November.

The council’s President, Hussain Waarish, explained that the island is being leased for a 30-year period to support industrial-level agriculture, poultry farming, and mariculture activities. Spanning 430,000 square feet, the land is leased at a rate of USD 0.039 per square foot, generating a total rental income of USD 830,000 over the lease term.

Waarish highlighted that the project aims to strengthen regional food security and generate employment opportunities. He added that interest had been expressed earlier this year in developing agricultural ventures on the island, a factor he believes will enhance engagement with the current bidding process.

This initiative reflects Hoandedhdhoo Council’s commitment to sustainable development and local economic growth, opening new possibilities for the agricultural and aquaculture sectors in the Maldives.
