Japan Donates Surveillance Equipment to Boost Maritime Security in Maldives

The Government of Japan has donated pier surveillance equipment to the Maldives, valued at ¥347 million (approximately USD 2.5 million or MVR 38.5 million), as part of the “Project for Enhancement of Ability in Maritime Safety and Security in Maldives.” This initiative, in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aims to bolster maritime security in the outer islands of the archipelago.

Her Excellency Takeuchi Midori, the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, officially handed over the equipment, which includes CCTV cameras, computer systems, smart TVs, and other necessary components to set up a comprehensive harbour surveillance system. The targeted islands for these installations include AA. Rasdhoo, HA. Uligan, V. Felidhoo, N. Fohdhoo, GA. Villingili, GN. Fuvahmulah, and L. Fonadhoo.

The equipment is intended to enhance the Maldives’ ability to prevent, detect, investigate, and prosecute crimes such as drug trafficking and illegal activities in the fisheries sector. It also aims to improve the safety and security of marine spaces surrounding the Maldives, particularly in remote areas outside the Greater Malé Region.

This contribution is part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the Maldives Police Service’s capabilities, with the broader goal of preventing terrorism and violent extremism while fostering community resilience.
