The largest diamondback squid ever caught in Maldives has been caught on April 28 2019 by Mohamed Jaleel. He was a trainee in the diamondback squid fishing training held by Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture.
The squid weighed 19.5 kgs. It was sold to MIFCO at a rate of MVR 180 per kg at a total of MVR 3,510. He caught the squid just outside of Hulhumale waters. Previously, two other fishermen had caught 12.2 kg and 11.3 kg squids.
Diamondback squid fishing is part of the government’s first 100 day pledges in order to introduce new types of fishing in Maldives. Under this pledge, the government has issued 7 out of the total 10 sets of equipment needed for diamondback squid fishing.
