President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a new national initiative, titled ‘Maldives 2.0’, aimed at digitising government operations and public services over a three-year period. The plan, introduced during a press conference held on Saturday, includes a wide-ranging framework that the government says will enhance transparency and modernise the public sector.
According to the President, the initiative seeks to establish a unified digital system through which all government activities and communications would be recorded and managed. A national conference scheduled for 9 May will bring together all government bodies to formally begin the programme. The administration stated that institutions will pledge their commitment to the digitisation effort at this event.
The initiative is built around eight core components. These include a secure digital identity system, interoperability between government platforms, strengthened cybersecurity, updated legal frameworks for digital governance, and infrastructure such as a national cloud and data centres. Additional areas include citizen-focused e-services, sector-wide digital upgrades in areas such as health and education, and efforts to develop the local ICT ecosystem.
The government has described the project as a response to long-standing challenges in public service delivery and transparency. Officials believe that a centralised digital system could reduce opportunities for corruption, speed up administrative processes, and improve access to public services.
President Muizzu cited his recent visit to Estonia as an important reference point in shaping the initiative, highlighting Estonia’s digital governance systems as a model the Maldives could adapt.
Since taking office, the President has spoken frequently about expanding the country’s digital infrastructure. The Maldives 2.0 initiative is the first time these ideas have been formally presented as a coordinated policy agenda.
