Maldives and Tajikistan Sign Visa Exemption Agreement

Maldives and Tajikistan have formalised a bilateral agreement granting mutual visa exemptions for their citizens for stays up to 30 days. The agreement was signed in New York by Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed, Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, and Hikmat Jonibek Ismoil, Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the United Nations. The ceremony took place at the Permanent Mission of Tajikistan.

This accord formalises the existing unilateral visa-free regimes between the two nations, facilitating easier travel for their citizens and strengthening bilateral relations.

The Maldives continues to lead in regional travel freedom. According to the Henley Passport Index, the Maldivian passport ranks 58th globally, allowing visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 94 countries. This positions it as the most powerful passport in South Asia, ahead of India, which ranks 80th with access to 62 countries.

Such agreements reflect the Maldives’ proactive approach to international diplomacy and cooperation and demonstrate its commitment to enhancing global mobility for its citizens.
