Maldives Faces Health System Collapse Without Lifestyle Changes, Warns Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has issued a stark warning that the Maldivian health system may face collapse unless significant lifestyle changes are adopted by citizens. This statement was made during the opening ceremony of a National Roundtable discussion on ‘Physical Activity for a Healthy Lifestyle,’ initiated by UNICEF Maldives.

Economic Implications of an Unhealthy Population

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Aishath Samiya, highlighted that over half of the Maldivian population is overweight, positioning the Maldives as the country with the highest prevalence of overweight individuals in the region. This alarming statistic points to a looming public health crisis that has significant economic ramifications.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart diseases, cancer, diabetes, and lung illnesses are reaching concerning levels. These conditions are primarily attributed to physical inactivity and unhealthy lifestyle habits. Samiya noted that a substantial portion of the Aasandha budget, the national health insurance scheme, is being spent on treating these NCDs. This trend suggests an unsustainable financial burden on the health system, which could divert resources from other essential services and investments.

The Cost of Physical Inactivity

Dr Edward Addai, UNICEF Representative to the Maldives, and Sports Minister Abdulla Rafiu, also spoke at the event, emphasising the economic costs associated with physical inactivity and unhealthy diets. Dr Addai pointed out that the Maldivian population’s preference for processed foods and high sugar intake, coupled with a sedentary lifestyle, exacerbates health issues, leading to increased medical expenditures. The economic impact of NCDs includes not only direct medical costs but also indirect costs such as lost productivity and reduced workforce participation due to illness.

Minister Rafiu reiterated that the rise in NCDs is significantly driven by evolving technology and busy work lives that promote sedentary behaviours. The Ministry of Sports, Fitness, and Recreation is committed to fostering a healthier community by encouraging physical activity and healthier lifestyle choices. This commitment includes developing policies and programmes aimed at reducing the prevalence of NCDs and promoting overall well-being.

The Economic Benefits of a Healthy Population

Investing in primary healthcare and preventive measures is crucial for reducing the economic burden of NCDs. Aishath Samiya emphasised that good health is often only valued once it is lost, underscoring the need for proactive investments in health and wellness. These investments can yield significant economic benefits by reducing healthcare costs, increasing productivity, and enhancing the quality of life.

Dr Addai further noted that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is not overly difficult, but requires a cultural shift away from harmful habits such as tobacco consumption. He highlighted that physical activity contributes not only to physical health but also to better sleep and mental well-being, which are critical components of a productive and efficient workforce.

Path Forward

The Ministry of Health’s warning illustrates the urgent need for Maldivians to adopt healthier lifestyles to avert a potential collapse of the health system. The economic implications of an unhealthy population are profound, affecting healthcare expenditures, productivity, and overall economic stability. By investing in preventive health measures and encouraging physical activity, the Maldives can mitigate the financial burden of NCDs and promote a healthier, more productive society.
