At the 156th session of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Executive Board in Geneva, Switzerland, Maldives’ Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, called upon major nations to support vulnerable countries in addressing health challenges exacerbated by climate change. The session, held from 3rd to 11th February 2025, serves as a platform for member states to discuss global health priorities and set the agenda for the upcoming World Health Assembly.
In his address, Minister Nazim reaffirmed the Maldives’ dedication to equitable health services under the ‘Health for All’ initiative. He emphasised efforts to enhance Primary Health Care (PHC) to ensure accessible services for all citizens.
Highlighting the nation’s forward-looking approach, the Minister announced plans for future ‘Green Smart Hospitals’. These facilities aim to be environmentally friendly and equipped with modern technologies to mitigate environmental risks and improve health services.
Minister Nazim expressed concern over the health impacts of climate change, noting that increased rainfall and flooding have led to a rise in disease outbreaks. He stressed that, despite advancements in the Maldives’ health system, these environmental challenges pose significant obstacles to service delivery. He urged WHO member states to assist vulnerable countries in overcoming these issues.
Additionally, the Minister highlighted the Maldives’ recent ban on electronic cigarettes, a measure implemented to protect youth from smoking and reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the organisation’s officials for their ongoing support in addressing health challenges, including those related to climate change and health emergencies.
