“Previously, the highest number of container cargo in the history of the Maldives was recorded in 2018,” explained Wajeeh. “To evaluate the economic changes in the Maldives, the two graphs represent the number of general cargo and container cargo from 2018 to August this year.”

The figures, updated as of August 2024, indicate a significant increase compared to the previous year, with general cargo imports rising by 22 percent and container imports growing by four percent.

MPL’s statistics further reveal that the number of containers imported this year has increased by three percent compared to 2018, while general cargo imports have surged by 35 percent.

Wajeeh noted that this period marks the largest import growth in the nation’s history, reflecting improvements in the Maldivian economy since Dr Muizzu took office.

He added that the government is now preparing to launch key projects aimed at further stimulating the economy and enhancing the financial well-being of the Maldivian people.

According to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the country imported goods worth USD 2 billion in the first seven months of this year.
