Maldives Sees Strong Growth in June Arrivals Despite Off-Season

Tourist arrivals to the Maldives during the first fifteen days of June saw a strong year-on-year increase, signalling continued momentum in the country’s peak off-season travel period. According to data released by the Ministry of Tourism, 72,352 tourists arrived between 1st and 15th June 2025, marking a 22.8 percent rise over the same period in 2024.

This uptick represents one of the highest early-June growth rates in recent years, with over 4,800 more tourists visiting than in the same period last year. It follows an already strong performance in May, where arrivals rose by 13.1 percent year-on-year, bringing the total number of visitors for 2025 so far to over one million.

The leading markets for 2025 as of mid-June remain largely unchanged, with China at the top, followed by Russia and the United Kingdom. Notably, arrivals from China exceeded 125,000, accounting for 12.1 percent of the total, while Russian and British arrivals reached 116,504 and 103,593 respectively.

The current operational bed capacity across all tourist facilities stood at just over 64,000 beds, spread across 1,203 establishments. Resorts continue to dominate the market, providing nearly 72 percent of total accommodation, while guesthouses make up around 23 percent. Safari vessels and hotels accounted for the remainder.

The data suggest that the Maldives’ strategy of diversifying source markets while expanding accommodation offerings in both luxury and budget segments may be paying off. The sharp rise in June arrivals, often a quieter period due to the Southwest Monsoon, points to growing demand resilience even outside traditional peak seasons.

Still, much of this growth appears concentrated in resort stays, with guesthouse occupancy potentially more sensitive to price and regional connectivity. Sustaining this trend may depend on continued airlift expansion, effective promotional campaigns, and stable global economic conditions.
