Maldives Stresses Need for Climate Resilience at World Government Summit

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has highlighted the importance of a united global response in ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for small island nations like the Maldives. His remarks came in a social media post following his participation in the Sustainable Development Goals in Action 2025 panel discussion, held on the sidelines of the World Government Summit 2025 in the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking at the panel, Minister Thoriq underscored the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that Small Island Developing States (SIDS) remain on the front lines of its impacts. Despite facing significant challenges, he said these nations continue to take bold action in combating climate change and driving sustainability efforts.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment reiterated that climate-resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions are key priorities in the Maldives. However, Minister Thoriq emphasised that such efforts alone would not be enough without broader global cooperation.

As part of the government’s initiatives to enhance climate resilience, efforts are underway to ensure that buildings in the Maldives are constructed to withstand climate-related impacts. The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has developed an instruction booklet providing guidance on climate-resilient housing. The guide offers recommendations for strengthening homes against natural disasters and promotes the use of environmentally friendly materials to reduce energy consumption.
