In an interview, STELCO’s new Managing Director, Mr. Hassan Mughnee stated that Greater Male needs to be interconnected with a backup electricity network. Making an example of the time Male suffered a water crisis for approximately a week, he explained that Male is not ready for such emergency situations and a backup network is extremely necessary if a power failure occurs in order to prevent a complete blackout.
He further stated that he intends on using the land in the industrial village in building a powerhouse and connect it to Vilimale, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi. This will aid in meeting the extremely high demand for electricity in Male.
In addition, Mr. Mughnee added that there are overhaul works in large powerhouses and that the backup network would allow the routine maintenance work to be done without causing any inconveniences to the citizens of Male.
