The latest statistics published by the Ministry of Finance reveal that the state collected MVR 61.7 million as Green Tax in October 2022.
According to the latest statistics from the finance ministry, the state collected MVR 60,029,890.32 million from resorts, guesthouses, and city hotels, MVR 1,625,933.67 from liveaboards and MVR 1,196.52 from home stays.
Currently, Green Tax is levied at the rate of USD 6 for tourists staying at resorts, safaris and hotels, and USD 3 is taken per day for tourists staying at guesthouses.
Kaafu Atoll contributed the most, totaling MVR 21.9 million, followed by Raa Atoll at MVR 4.7 million and Alif Alif Atoll at MVR 4.6 million. The statistics also show that Thaa Atoll and Laamu Atoll received the least in Green Tax.
The Green Fund is used to finance environmental protection and sustainable development initiatives such as water and sanitation, coastline protection, and waste management. As of now, MVR 154.9 million has been spent this year for environmental projects under this fund.
