The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has announced a new extension for companies to settle overdue fees and fines related to expatriate workers. Initially, the deadline for payment was set for August 12, then extended to August 24. However, companies now have a third opportunity to address these financial obligations, with the revised deadline set for September 16.

In a recent announcement, the ministry stated that companies owing less than MVR 100,000 in fees and fines must complete their payments by the new deadline. Those who fail to comply will have their names publicly disclosed, and their services suspended via the expat system.

The decision to grant additional time comes after the ministry received complaints from companies struggling to pay large amounts in a single payment. As a result, companies will now have the option to enter into a payment plan through the expat system, allowing for a more manageable repayment schedule.

Minister Ali Ihusan noted that while 139,000 work permits have been issued in the Maldives, only 36% of employers pay the related fees on time. In response to ongoing issues, the cabinet has also decided to compile and publish a list of companies that have been negligent in their obligations towards expatriate workers. Previously, the Ministry of Homeland Security had released a list of companies with outstanding fees and fines concerning expatriate work permits and quotas.
