The government has formalised plans to develop a 5-star resort and a hotel training school on Hulhimendhoo Island, near Maamendhoo in Laamu Atoll, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The agreement was signed by Minister of Tourism, Ibrahim Faisal, during a ceremony held in Malé.
At the ceremony, Minister Faisal highlighted the importance of enhancing training opportunities within the tourism sector, pointing out that previous efforts had not sufficiently addressed the needs of local employees. The new project aims to bridge this gap by creating specialised training avenues for those already working in the industry, as well as newcomers eager to build careers in tourism.
The resort and training school are expected to operate side by side, with the goal of producing highly skilled professionals who can elevate service standards across the Maldives. Officials involved in the project noted that this initiative would focus on raising the level of tourism education to international standards while tackling existing challenges within the sector.
The development in Hulhimendhoo is set to contribute to the diversification of the tourism industry, particularly in regions that have yet to fully capitalise on tourism’s economic potential. This initiative is seen as a step forward in supporting sustainable growth and empowering local communities through targeted skills development.
Once operational, the new training school is expected to significantly enhance the country’s capabilities in producing a skilled workforce, further solidifying the Maldives’ reputation as a premier global destination.
