Maldives Immigration has announced that over 5,600 undocumented migrants were deported in 2024 as part of intensified efforts to address illegal migration. The government’s focus on tackling this long-standing issue led to a series of targeted operations and new initiatives aimed at identifying and deporting those in violation of immigration laws.
Surpassing Targets in 2024
Last year, the government set a target to deport 5,000 undocumented migrants. Official figures confirm that this goal was exceeded, with 5,613 individuals deported, largely through immigration raids and workplace inspections. These operations were conducted with the support of a designated task force comprising enforcement agencies and government ministries.
Role of Immigration Watch
A critical tool in these efforts has been the Immigration Watch portal, launched in July 2024. This platform allows citizens to report suspected undocumented migrants and other immigration-related violations. Since its launch, 1,161 cases have been reported through the portal, of which 1,061 have been investigated.
The reports revealed a range of violations, with the majority involving migrant workers engaging in illegal business activities (239 cases) and work visa violations (239 cases). The portal also documented 65 cases linked to prostitution rings, 41 instances of migrant workers absconding from their sponsoring companies, and 14 reports of tourist visa violations. Other issues included illegal visa usage and violations of employer sponsorship requirements.
In addition, Maldives Immigration investigated cases involving criminal activities and drug abuse by migrant workers, highlighting the broader social impact of undocumented migration.
Pathways for Regularisation
Beyond deportation, the government has introduced measures to help undocumented individuals regularise their status. These initiatives, combined with efforts to collect biometric data on foreign nationals in the Maldives, form part of a comprehensive strategy to address illegal migration systemically.
A Coordinated Response
The administration has emphasised collaboration among enforcement agencies and ministries to resolve the challenges posed by undocumented migration. With the success of the Immigration Watch portal and the task force’s operations, the Maldives is working towards a more structured and sustainable approach to migration management.
The government’s continued focus on enforcement, combined with pathways for legalisation, reflects a dual strategy aimed at balancing the need for law enforcement with humanitarian considerations.
