PGO Requests ACC to Investigate Settlement Payments by Former Administration

The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has formally requested the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to conduct an investigation into compensation payments made to private individuals through a settlement committee established during the previous administration of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

A parliamentary committee has approved an investigation into the involvement of three former senior government officials: former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, former Minister of the President’s Office Ali Shyam, and former Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail.

The request is based on findings from the finance committee’s report, which identified allegations of improper allocation of state funds and assets. According to the PGO, the report raised issues that fall under the ACC’s jurisdiction for investigation.

Between 2018 and 2023, the administration allocated 36 islands, six lagoons, and over MVR 2 billion in compensation to various parties. An additional MVR 61.2 million was provided to Le Triveni JV and Dheebaja Investment Pvt Ltd. These transactions have become focal points in the ongoing investigation.

The Attorney General’s Office recently invalidated nine compensation agreements, citing procedural violations. Earlier, President Muizzu had dissolved the settlement committee shortly after assuming office in November.

The ACC is now expected to carry out a detailed investigation into the matter to establish whether there was any misuse of public funds or violations of procedure in the settlement agreements.
